Sentek SoluSAMPLER

Incorporating SARDI Soil Water Extraction Technologies
The Sentek SoluSAMPLER is a soil solution sampler that draws moisture from the surrounding soil and stores it in an inert ceramic cup, awaiting collection and analysis. It is the ideal complement to the TriSCAN sensor, enabling precise site specific analysis of soil pore water salinity content.

Sentek SoluSAMPLER is available in two types, the difference is in the pore size of the ceramic cup:

  • Low Flow¬†– suitable for most applications
  • High Flow – suitable for light texture and moist soils (for rapid sampling)

Sample Analysis

Samples of soil pore water are extracted from the ceramic cup using a syringe. Analysis of the water can then be carried out by:
  • Portable Electrical Conductivity (EC) meter
  • Nitrate strips
  • Laboratory analysis

SoluSAMPLER soil solution extraction device features

  • A custom designed ceramic cup, available with different pore sizes to suit the soil type it is used in
  • Once under vacuum, the extractor draws moisture from the surrounding soil and stores it in the inert ceramic cup awaiting collection and analysis
  • The solution extracted into the cup retains its ionic integrity as the ceramic does not influence the solutes
  • The ceramic cup is glued to a length of 40mm PVC conduit, housing an extraction tube with a two way stopcock

Benefits of Salinity and Nitrate Monitoring

Salinity and nitrate monitoring via soil solution sampling is important:

  • Saline water can reduce crop quality and yield
  • Irrigation efficiency may lead to an increased risk of harmful salt accumulation in the root zone
  • Measurement can detect salt before visual symptoms are seen
  • Using reclaimed, treated, or groundwater can potentially increase salt content
  • Nitrate levels are important for crop yields
  • Nitrate leaching into groundwater can have serious health consequences

Sentek recommends using a SoluSAMPLER together with probes built with TriSCAN sensors.
